Needlepoint Collection

Needlepoint is a surface embroidery technique that covers the top of a canvas. Many historic pieces are done in Petit Point.  Since the 16th century, Petit Point has been identified as a separate type of needlework.  The stitches are smaller or petite.  At times needlepoint is combined with Petit Point in intricate pieces to show depth and character.

Needlepoint dates back to the Egyptians in 1500 BC. It was originally created as a tool to make utilitarian textiles, but later evolved into a more decorative and fashion oriented technique. All pieces feature in this collection are antique French hand made needlepoint fabrics.

Aubusson Collection

Antique Aubusson are handwoven rugs and tapestries that originated in the town of Aubusson in central France in the 17th century.  Aubusson rugs were originally made for aristocratic patrons. The tapestries often depicted scenes from history, religion and mythology.  In the 18th and 19th century, tapestries were produced for the middle classes. They adorned the walls and floors of their homes to create warmth.

Ecclesiastical Collection

Ecclesiastical embroidery refers to the fine stitch (usually metallic thread) executed for ornamentation on altar linens and religious vestments destined for sacred use.

The antique galon trim that is removed from worn vestments is usually high in metallic content.

These vestments would have been discarded, thus saving the adornments is upcycling at its best.

Tapestries

Tapestries became status symbols among the aristocracy in the Middle Ages. They also had practical use providing insulation for castle walls, covering for doorways and privacy screens around beds. Kings and Nobles took them on travels from castle and castle for reasons of comfort and prestige.
